The 1N6278A is a unidirectional Zener TVS diode from onsemi's Mosorb™ series, built to clamp transients on a single 17.1V reverse standoff rail. Its 19V minimum breakdown voltage means it starts conducting when the surge pushes the line above that threshold, and it holds the clamp at 27.7V max while absorbing 1500W of peak pulse power — enough to handle a typical industrial surge without letting the downstream silicon see more than that ceiling.

For a 24V DC bus or a 12V automotive rail with a 60V load-dump transient, this part clips the overshoot to 27.7V — well within the 30V absolute max of many downstream regulators.
