Flat-wire winding in a 1008 footprint
The DFE252010F-R68M=P2 is a shielded drum-core wirewound inductor from Murata's DFE252010F series, built with a flat-wire winding that packs more copper cross-section into the 1008 (2520 metric) body than a round-wire equivalent would. That construction directly explains the 3.5 A continuous current rating and the 37 mOhm max DCR — the flat wire keeps conduction losses low enough that the part can carry that current without exceeding the 125 °C operating ceiling.
Why the saturation current matters more than the DC rating
The DC current rating of 3.5 A is the thermal limit — the current at which the self-heating from the 37 mOhm DCR raises the internal temperature to the rated maximum. The saturation current (Isat) is 5 A, meaning the inductance drops by 30% (the standard definition) at that peak. In a buck-converter output filter, the inductor sees a DC bias plus an AC ripple current; the sum must stay below Isat, not just below the DC rating. A 3.5 A DC load with 1 A ripple crests at 4.5 A — still within the 5 A Isat ceiling, so the inductance holds through the switching cycle. The iron-powder core material handles that saturation gracefully — it does not hard-saturate like ferrite, so the inductance rolls off gradually rather than collapsing. That behaviour is useful in power stages where the inductor must tolerate brief overloads without the current spike that a ferrite-core part would pass.
