What the ratings mean for your power rail
The DFE201612E-R47M=P2 is a shielded drum-core wirewound inductor from Murata's DFE201612E series, rated 470 nH ±20% with a continuous current of 4.5 A and a saturation current of 5.5 A. The 26 mOhm max DCR means at full rated current the I²R loss is about 0.53 W — the part's self-heating stays within the 125°C ceiling in a typical 85°C ambient if the PCB copper area is adequate. The 5.5 A saturation current is the point where inductance typically drops 30% — for a buck converter with 30% ripple, the peak inductor current must stay below this to avoid a hard saturation that would spike the switch current. The 4.5 A DC rating is the thermal limit; the saturation limit is higher, so the part is current-limited by temperature, not core saturation, in most designs.
The metal composite core gives stable inductance over temperature and DC bias, with no air-gap fringing that would couple into adjacent traces. Surface-mount, supplied in tape and reel or cut tape — standard pick-and-place compatible. The shielded construction contains the magnetic field, so the inductor can sit next to sensitive analog or RF circuitry without crosstalk.
Suitable for under-hood electronics, outdoor telecom power supplies, and motor-drive DC-DC converters where the ambient sees 105°C on a hot day. The metal core material maintains inductance across the range better than ferrite, which loses permeability above 100°C.
