Clock distribution for high-speed serial links
The SY89874UMG is a 1:2 fanout buffer and divider from Microchip's Precision Edge® family, designed to distribute a single differential clock or data signal to two LVPECL outputs at rates up to 2.5 GHz. This places it in high-speed serial backplanes, optical transceiver modules, and FPGA reference clock trees where signal integrity and low jitter are critical. It accepts a wide range of input standards — CML, HSTL, LVDS, or LVPECL — and outputs LVPECL, making it a flexible level translator and fanout node in mixed-signal environments. The differential input and output (Yes/Yes) reject common-mode noise, preserving edge quality over long board traces.
The 16-MLF® package (3x3 mm) with exposed pad provides a low-inductance thermal path to the PCB ground plane. For layout, the exposed paddle should be soldered to a thermal via array to keep junction temperature within limits at the 2.5 GHz switching rate.
