The Microchip Technology SST39VF1681-70-4C-EKE is a 16 Mbit parallel NOR flash from the SST39 MPF series, organized as 2M x 8 bits. Its 70 ns access time means the CPU can execute code directly from this flash (eXecute-In-Place) without copying to RAM first — a common pattern in boot firmware and real-time control applications where every microsecond of latency matters.

The 10 µs word/page write cycle is fast enough to handle firmware updates and calibration data writes without the multi-millisecond sector-erase penalty typical of NAND flash. For a 16 Mbit part, a full-chip erase completes in well under a second, making field-upgradeable firmware practical.
