The SMCJ8.5CE3/TR13 is a bidirectional Zener TVS diode from Microchip Technology, rated for 1500W peak pulse power (10/1000µs waveform) with an 8.5V reverse standoff voltage. That 1500W rating means it can absorb a 100A surge without failing — enough to clamp a 15V spike on a 5V or 3.3V rail before the downstream IC sees it. General-purpose use covers industrial control, telecom line cards, and automotive body electronics — anywhere a power rail or data line needs a single-device clamp against lightning, inductive kickback, or ESD.
Clamping voltage and surge current
At the 100A peak pulse current, the clamping voltage is 15V maximum. That is the ceiling the protected circuit sees during a surge — a 15V clamp on an 8.5V standoff rail gives a 6.5V margin before the TVS conducts leakage. The breakdown voltage starts at 8.89V minimum, so the part begins clamping just above the normal operating voltage.
Active production and ordering
The DO-214AB (SMC) package is a standard JEDEC footprint; reflow profiles for lead-free solder are well documented.
