1500W Zener TVS for 8.5V Rails
The SMCJ8.5CAE3/TR13 is a bidirectional Zener transient-voltage-suppression diode rated for 1500W peak pulse power per the 10/1000µs waveform. Its 8.5V reverse standoff voltage lets it sit on 8.5V nominal power rails without conducting, while the 13.6V clamping ceiling limits the voltage the downstream circuitry sees during a surge.
Surge Current and Clamp Margin
At the 10/1000µs pulse, the device handles 110.3A peak pulse current before the clamp rises to 13.6V. The 8.89V minimum breakdown voltage gives a guard band above the 8.5V standoff — the TVS stays off during normal operation but triggers before the rail exceeds the downstream IC's absolute maximum. For a 12V rail, this part is too low; for 5V or 8.5V rails, the margin is tight enough to protect sensitive logic without nuisance triggering.
Active Production, Sourced per RFQ
Microchip lists the SMCJ8.5CAE3/TR13 as Active.
DO-214AB Footprint and Reflow
The DO-214AB (SMC) package is a standard JEDEC outline with a 0.208-inch body width and gull-wing leads. The cathode band identifies the polarity for unidirectional variants; this bidirectional part has no polarity marking requirement. The solder pad footprint matches the SMCJ series land pattern — no board respin needed if you already use the SMCJ family. Reflow per the solder profile in the datasheet; the package is compatible with lead-free solder processes.
