TVS diode for 24V rail surge clamping
The SMCJ24CAE3/TR13 is a bidirectional Zener TVS diode from Microchip Technology, rated for 1500W peak pulse power (10/1000µs waveform) with a 24V reverse standoff voltage. It clamps transients at 38.9V maximum, protecting a 24V DC rail from surges up to 38.6A peak pulse current. The single bidirectional channel suits AC signal lines or bipolar supplies where polarity-independent clamping is needed.
Breakdown and clamping thresholds
Minimum breakdown voltage is 26.7V, ensuring the TVS does not conduct on a nominal 24V rail but activates before the protected circuitry sees damaging overvoltage. Maximum clamping voltage of 38.9V at Ipp limits the voltage spike seen by downstream components, critical for ICs with absolute maximum ratings near 40V.
The DO-214AB (SMC) surface-mount package supports reflow assembly and is common for 1500W-class TVS diodes, simplifying PCB footprint reuse.
