Transient suppressor for 12–15 V DC rails
The SMCJ20AE3/TR13 is a Zener-based TVS diode rated for 1500 W peak pulse power (10/1000 µs waveform), with a 20 V reverse standoff voltage. It clamps transients at 32.4 V maximum while conducting 46.3 A peak pulse current. The unidirectional design protects a single polarity rail — typical for 12 V or 15 V DC supplies in industrial control, telecom, or power distribution.
Clamping voltage and pulse current at 32.4 V, 46.3 A
With a breakdown voltage minimum of 22.2 V, the device triggers before the rail exceeds safe limits. The 32.4 V clamping ceiling at 46.3 A means a 12 V bus sees the surge clamped nearly 10 V above the rail — acceptable for most downstream regulators with 40 V input tolerance. The 1500 W rating holds for the 10/1000 µs pulse; shorter, lower-energy spikes see proportionally higher clamp current.
Microchip lists the SMCJ20AE3/TR13 as Active. For BOM planning, this is a low-risk line item — no imminent allocation or phase-out.
DO-214AB SMC footprint for reflow assembly
The DO-214AB (SMC) package is a standard surface-mount outline with a 0.50 mm terminal pitch and a large copper pad on the cathode side for heat sinking. Solder profile follows standard JEDEC MSL-1 for lead-free reflow.
