17V rail protection with 1500W surge capacity
Its 17V reverse standoff voltage means the diode does not conduct at the nominal rail voltage, leaving the protected circuit undisturbed during normal operation. When a surge hits, the diode clamps at 30.5V maximum while shunting up to 49.2A of peak pulse current in the 10/1000 µs waveform.
The minimum breakdown voltage is 18.9V, which is the voltage at which the diode starts to conduct. This is not the same as the standoff voltage — the design margin between 17V standoff and 18.9V breakdown ensures the diode stays off during normal rail ripple and tolerance. The 30.5V clamping voltage is the maximum voltage the downstream circuitry will see during a surge event. If your 12V rail has a 36V absolute maximum input rating, this clamp provides comfortable margin. The 49.2A peak pulse current is the current the diode can handle in that same event — useful for estimating the surge source impedance.
