Bidirectional TVS for 170V rail protection
The SMCJ170CAE3/TR13 is a single-channel bidirectional Zener TVS diode from Microchip Technology, rated for 1500W peak pulse power per the 10/1000µs waveform. The 170V reverse standoff voltage means it stays off the rail up to that DC level, then clamps transients at 275V max. That 275V ceiling is the number to check against the downstream device's absolute maximum rating — if the protected IC can't survive 275V for the pulse duration, you need a lower-clamp part or a multi-stage clamp.
Peak pulse power and temperature range
At 1500W peak pulse, this diode handles surge currents up to 5.5A for the standard 10/1000µs pulse. The operating junction temperature spans -65°C to 150°C — wide enough for outdoor telecom cabinets, industrial motor drives, and under-hood automotive modules where ambient heat and cold soak are real.
