Transient protection for 160V rails
The SMCJ160CAE3/TR13 is a bidirectional Zener TVS diode rated for 1500W peak pulse power, clamping a 160V nominal rail to 259V maximum during a surge event. A single bidirectional channel means one device protects both polarities on AC or bipolar DC lines — no need for two antiparallel unidirectional parts.
Clamping voltage and pulse current
With a breakdown voltage minimum of 178V and a clamping ceiling of 259V at 5.8A peak pulse current, the part leaves a 81V window between the rail and the clamp — enough margin for most 160V bus transients without stressing downstream semiconductors. The 1500W rating at 10/1000µs is the standard telecom surge waveform; for shorter pulses (8/20µs) the peak power capability is higher, but the datasheet derating curve should be consulted for non-standard conditions.
