14V standoff, 1500W peak pulse – the rail clamp for 12V buses
The SMCJ14E3/TR13 is a single-channel Zener TVS diode from Microchip, rated for a 14V reverse standoff voltage and a 1500W peak pulse power capability on the 10/1000µs waveform. This combination makes it the standard clamp for a 12V DC rail where the normal operating voltage stays under 14V and the TVS only conducts during a surge event. When the surge current reaches 58.1A, the clamping voltage is held to 25.8V maximum. That clamp ceiling is the number the downstream circuit sees — every component on that rail must survive 25.8V for the pulse duration, or the TVS alone does not protect them. The breakdown voltage starts at a minimum of 15.6V, so the device does not avalanche during normal rail ripple or transients below that threshold. The 14V standoff is the DC bias the part can sit across indefinitely without conducting significant leakage.
Active production, DO-214AB package, Tape & Reel delivery
The package is DO-214AB (SMC), a standard surface-mount footprint with a 0.50 mm lead pitch and a copper tab on the cathode side for thermal conduction.
The upper limit is the die temperature during the surge event — derating the peak pulse power above 25°C per the datasheet curve is necessary to stay within the junction rating.
