What this TVS protects and where it sits
The SMBJ40E3/TR13 is a 600 W peak-pulse Zener TVS diode from Microchip, rated for general-purpose circuit protection on a 40 V nominal rail. Its 44.4 V minimum breakdown voltage means it starts clamping before the protected bus hits 45 V, and the 71.4 V maximum clamp at 8.4 A sets the peak voltage the downstream silicon must survive. Surface-mount in DO-214AA (SMB) — the footprint is standard for 600 W TVS parts, so a layout swap with other SMB-packaged 40 V TVS diodes is a straight pad-for-pad replacement.
Unidirectional clamp — one polarity only
This is a single-direction TVS (one unidirectional channel). It protects against positive overvoltage transients referenced to ground; reverse-polarity events forward-bias the Zener junction and the part conducts like a diode. For AC-coupled signal lines or bidirectional bus protection (e.g., RS-485, CAN), you need a bidirectional variant such as the SMBJ40CA.
Microchip lists the SMBJ40E3/TR13 as Active.
That covers military avionics, downhole tools, and outdoor telecom cabinets without derating. The DO-214AA body is rated for standard reflow soldering; no special handling beyond MSL 1 (typical for this package class).
