What this 600W Zener TVS diode protects
The SMBJ26AE3/TR13: The 28.9V minimum breakdown voltage sets the threshold where the diode starts conducting — below that the 26V rail sees no leakage from the device. Housed in the SMB package, it is a surface-mount part for general-purpose transient suppression.
Clamping voltage and pulse current — the protection window
With a maximum clamp of 42.1V at 14.2A, the diode holds the transient below the typical 48V absolute maximum of downstream 5V or 3.3V regulators when the series resistance is low. The 600W peak pulse rating is the energy envelope for a 10/1000µs surge — a shorter pulse (e.g. 8/20µs) allows higher peak current, but the datasheet derating curve must be consulted for non-standard waveforms.
