18V rail clamp – 600W peak pulse, DO-214AA
When a transient hits, it clamps at 29.2V maximum while conducting 20.5A peak pulse current (10/1000µs waveform).
The 20V minimum breakdown is the voltage at which the device starts to conduct in avalanche. For a 12V rail that sees occasional 24V load-dump spikes, this part stays off until the spike exceeds 20V, then clamps hard at 29.2V.
Microchip lists the SMBJ18AE3/TR13 as Active. No last-time-buy notice, no end-of-life window on the horizon.
General-purpose application fit
The SMBJ18AE3/TR13 is classified for General Purpose applications. That covers overvoltage protection on DC power rails, I/O lines, and low-voltage bus transients in industrial controls, telecom, and consumer gear. The single unidirectional channel protects one rail per device – use two back-to-back for bidirectional clamping on AC-coupled lines.
