Active Zener TVS in DO-214AC – what it protects
The SMAJ8.5CE3/TR13: Its 8.5V reverse standoff voltage and 15.9V clamping at 31.4A make it a fit for 5V or 3.3V rail protection where the transient energy is moderate.
Clamping voltage and peak pulse current – the numbers that matter
At the 10/1000µs test waveform, the clamping voltage is 15.9V maximum at 31.4A peak pulse current (Ipp). This clamping level is the voltage the protected circuitry sees during a surge; a 15.9V clamp is safe for 12V rails but too high for 3.3V logic without additional series resistance.
Temperature range and application environments
The device is rated for General Purpose applications – no power-line protection or AEC-Q automotive qualification is listed, so it is not formally qualified for automotive use despite the wide temp range.
