Zener TVS for 36V rail protection
The 36V reverse standoff voltage means the diode does not conduct at normal rail voltage up to 36V; it only activates when the transient exceeds the 40V minimum breakdown voltage. The clamping voltage is 64.3V maximum at the rated 9.8A peak pulse current.
What the 500W rating means for your BOM
For a 36V rail, this typically covers secondary lightning surges and inductive load switching — but not direct lightning strikes without additional series impedance. Derate for ambient temperature above 25°C per the datasheet curve. If the downstream components (e.g., a 40V-rated DC-DC converter input) cannot tolerate 64.3V, you need a lower-clamp TVS or a series resistor to share the voltage.
