Zener TVS – 500W peak pulse, 22.2V breakdown
The SMAJ20E3/TR13 is a unidirectional Zener transient-voltage-suppression (TVS) diode from Microchip Technology, rated for 500W peak pulse power per the 10/1000µs waveform. Its minimum breakdown voltage is 22.2V, clamping a 20V nominal rail at 35.8V max under a 13.9A peak pulse current.
The 22.2V minimum breakdown ensures the device does not conduct during normal 20V operation, leaving a 2.2V margin before avalanche. At the clamp point, 35.8V max is the voltage the protected circuit must survive for the pulse duration — a typical 20V-rated capacitor or IC with 40V absolute max has headroom. The 13.9A peak pulse current is the surge the diode shunts; verify your source impedance and expected transient energy stay within the 500W pulse derating curve.
Microchip lists the SMAJ20E3/TR13 as Active.
