Its reverse standoff voltage of 20V means the part sits across the rail and draws negligible leakage current until a surge pushes the line above the breakdown threshold. When the surge hits, the diode clamps at 32.4V maximum while shunting 15.4A of peak pulse current in the standard 10/1000 µs waveform. The 500W peak pulse power rating is the energy-handling ceiling — stay under it and the part survives repeated events.
