12V rail protection in a hand-solderable SMA package
Its 12V reverse standoff voltage means the line runs at 12V without leakage; once the voltage exceeds 13.3V the device avalanches and holds the clamp at 19.9V while shunting 25.1A of peak pulse current. The 500W peak pulse power rating tells you how much surge energy it can absorb in the standard 10/1000µs waveform — enough for most industrial and automotive transients. The DO-214AC (SMA) package is a common footprint that hand-solders easily with a fine iron; no hot-air rework needed.
Sizing the clamp for your 12V bus
The 19.9V clamping voltage sets the upper limit the protected IC sees. If your downstream part is rated for, say, 20V absolute max, this TVS leaves only 0.1V of headroom — marginal. A 12V-rated part with a higher clamp (e.g. 24V) would give more margin but might not trigger early enough. The 25.1A peak pulse current assumes the 10/1000µs waveform; shorter pulses (like 8/20µs) allow higher current, but the datasheet's derating curve is the final word. For a 12V rail in a 24V truck system, the 13.3V min breakdown ensures the TVS doesn't conduct during normal operation.
Microchip lists the SMAJ12AE3/TR13 as Active. No end-of-life notice, no last-time-buy deadline. Cut Tape (CT) is also available for small-batch builds.
