The 40 MHz core speed delivers roughly 10 MIPS — enough for a CAN message handler running at 250 kbps or 500 kbps with margin for a control loop and diagnostics. The 48 KB Flash is a mid-range capacity: it holds a modest CANopen or J1939 stack plus application code, but if your firmware image approaches 40 KB you will be tight on headroom. The 3.25 KB RAM is the real constraint — do not plan on large data buffers or a full TCP/IP stack. The 1 KB EEPROM (separate from Flash) is useful for calibration constants and fault logs that survive reprogramming cycles.
