64 MHz — why it matters for an 8-bit core
At 64 MHz, this PIC18F runs twice as fast as the 32 MHz PIC16LF1559 and the 16-bit PIC24FJ256GA106. For a control loop that polls a 12-bit ADC channel and fires a PWM update on every cycle, that clock headroom means you can keep the loop rate above 50 kHz without dropping into assembly.
125°C junction — where this part lives and where it doesn't
If the board sits near a motor winding, inside a solar combiner box, or on a diesel engine block, the 125°C ceiling keeps the MCU inside its derating curve. At 85°C ambient the 64 MHz PLL still holds lock; above that, the datasheet's thermal derating for the internal regulator starts to matter. The 28-SSOP package has no exposed pad, so the heat path is through the leads — keep the copper pour under the body generous.
CAN and LIN on 25 I/O — bus interface without a separate transceiver budget
With CANbus, LINbus, I²C, SPI, and two UART/USART channels, this 28-pin part carries more serial interfaces than many 16-bit MCUs in the same footprint. The 25 general-purpose I/O pins are enough to handle a dozen sensors, a small character LCD, and a CAN transceiver enable line. The 12-bit ADC has 24 channels — you can read a thermistor string, a potentiometer, and a current-sense resistor without multiplexing externally. The single 5-bit DAC is there for analog set-point generation or a simple waveform output.
