40 MHz core and CAN — the decision drivers
At 40 MHz the PIC18 core executes most single-cycle instructions, so the throughput is roughly 10 MIPS. That is enough for real-time CAN message handling at 1 Mbps without a separate CAN controller IC. The 768 x 8 RAM is modest—enough for a few CAN mailboxes and a small state machine—but the 256 x 8 EEPROM lets you store calibration or node-ID data without an external serial EEPROM. The supply range of 4.2 V to 5.5 V matches legacy 5 V industrial backplanes and automotive 12 V battery systems after a linear regulator.
Surface-mount only; no through-hole option.
