32 MHz 8-bit PIC with XLP — the breadboard workhorse
The Microchip PIC16LF1709-I/P is an 8-bit PIC MCU from the PIC® XLP™ 16F family, built for low-power operation across a 1.8V to 3.6V supply range. It runs at 32 MHz and packs 14KB of Flash program memory with 1K x 8 of RAM — enough headroom for sensor fusion, LIN-bus nodes, or portable instrument firmware. The scorch mark on a dead board often points to a blown regulator, not the MCU — but when the PIC itself fails, this DIP form factor is one of the easiest to pull and replace.
Supply range and low-power peripherals
The XLP technology keeps sleep current low enough for battery-backed field devices that need to run years between swaps. On-chip peripherals include Brown-out Detect/Reset, POR, PWM, and WDT — the usual watchdog and reset infrastructure for unattended operation.
Memory and data conversion budget
14KB (8K x 14) Flash program memory and 1K x 8 RAM set the firmware complexity ceiling. This is enough for a modest RTOS or a bare-metal state machine handling a few sensor streams and a serial protocol stack. Data converters include a 12-channel 10-bit ADC and a single 8-bit DAC — useful for analog sensor readout, threshold detection, or generating a simple analog output without an external DAC. 18 I/O lines are available in the 20-pin package, leaving a few spare pins for button inputs, LED indicators, or a debug header after the primary interfaces are assigned.
Not rated for under-hood or downhole, but fine for the vast majority of industrial and consumer applications.
