It integrates a 4-channel 10-bit ADC, PWM output, brown-out reset, power-on reset, and a watchdog timer — enough peripheral set to handle simple sensor read, switch debounce, and low-speed control loops without external support chips. The internal oscillator saves the crystal and load capacitors, keeping the BOM tight for cost-sensitive or space-constrained boards.
Through-hole fit for prototyping and retrofit
The 8-DIP (0.300", 7.62mm) body with through-hole mounting means this part goes straight into a breadboard, a socket on an existing production board, or a hand-assembled prototype. No reflow profile needed — hand-solder or wave-solder. The 5 available I/O lines (one is input-only on reset) are enough for a few pushbuttons, an LED, a sensor interrupt, and a PWM output for dimming or small motor speed control. Supply range from 2 V to 5.5 V lets it run on two alkaline cells or a regulated 3.3 V / 5 V rail without a level shifter.

PWM and ADC for motor and sensor interfaces
The on-chip PWM peripheral, combined with the 10-bit ADC, makes this MCU a natural fit for simple closed-loop motor control — think a small DC fan with tachometer feedback, or a brushed motor speed controller with current sense. The 20 MHz clock gives a 200 ns instruction cycle, fast enough for 10 kHz to 20 kHz PWM switching with reasonable resolution. The brown-out reset and watchdog timer keep the system from locking up during a brownout or software glitch, which matters in an unattended or remote installation.
