OTP memory locks the firmware — no field updates
The Microchip PIC12C508A-04I/P is an 8-bit PIC MCU with 768B (512 x 12) OTP program memory and 25 x 8 bytes of RAM. The OTP (one-time programmable) memory means the firmware is written once during production and cannot be changed afterward — no field updates, no bug fixes, no re-spin. This is the single most important constraint for any design using this part: the code must be final and fully validated before the first device is programmed.
4 MHz internal oscillator — no external crystal needed
The core runs at 4 MHz from an internal oscillator, eliminating the external crystal or ceramic resonator and its two load capacitors. That saves board space and BOM cost, but the 4 MHz ceiling also caps the instruction cycle at 1 µs — fine for slow sensor polling, button debounce, or simple state machines, but not for high-speed PWM or bit-banged serial protocols above 9600 baud.
Industrial temperature range and 8-DIP package
The 8-DIP through-hole package (0.300" row spacing) is a legacy footprint, common in retrofit designs and low-volume builds where hand-soldering or socketing is preferred over SMT reflow.
5 I/O pins with POR and WDT
Five general-purpose I/O pins are available, along with Power-on Reset (POR) and Watchdog Timer (WDT) peripherals. Supply voltage range is 3V to 5.5V, covering both 3.3V and 5V logic rails without a level shifter.
