Boost regulator with a fixed 15 V rail for LED backlight
The MIC2292-15YML is a fixed-frequency PWM step-up (boost) DC-DC regulator from Microchip, designed to drive white LED strings or other loads requiring a regulated 15 V output from a lower-voltage supply. It integrates the switch internally, rated for 750 mA, and operates at a 1.6 MHz switching frequency, which keeps the inductor small and the ripple manageable for compact backlight modules. PWM dimming input is built in, making this a direct fit for LCD backlight brightness control in industrial or automotive displays.
The output is fixed at 15 V, not adjustable. That suits a series string of three to four white LEDs (typical Vf ~3.2–3.6 V each) with headroom for the current-sense resistor. Supply input range is 2.5 V to 10 V, so it can run from a single Li-ion cell, a 5 V rail, or a 9 V battery. The 750 mA switch current limits the output power — at 15 V out, expect around 1.5 W to 2 W usable, depending on input voltage and efficiency.
Package and rework — 8-MLF with exposed pad
The pad is small — 2x2 mm — so a via array under the pad is worth the board space if the load runs near the 750 mA limit. The pad will reflow before the side pins if the profile is right — lift the part, not the pad. Surface-mount only; the 8-VFDFN footprint is standard, but the 0.50 mm pitch on the perimeter pins means a clean stencil and a tight reflow profile.
