2-cell Li-Ion charger in a 3x3 DFN
The MCP73213T-A5JI/MF is a constant-current, constant-voltage linear charger for 2-cell Lithium Ion/Polymer battery packs, delivering up to 1.1 A charge current from a supply up to 13 V. Operating from -40°C to 85°C, it covers industrial ambient ranges without derating the charge current at the top end.
Charging profile and protection
The charger targets a battery pack voltage of 8.8 V (2 x 4.4 V cells) and the charge current is constant-programmable via an external resistor, with a 1.1 A maximum. Integrated over-voltage protection on the output prevents the battery from seeing a voltage above the safe termination level — this is a hard shutdown, not a clamp, so the charger stops switching until the fault clears.
Package and rework reality
The 10-DFN (3x3 mm) has a 0.5 mm pitch — fine enough that a standard hot-air rework station can lift the part cleanly if the board is preheated to 125°C to reduce thermal shock on the adjacent passives.
