Two 12-bit DACs, one small package, no external reference needed
The Microchip MCP4822-E/SN is a dual 12-bit voltage-output digital-to-analog converter in an 8-pin SOIC package. Each of the two DACs delivers a buffered voltage output with a typical settling time of 4.5 µs, making it suitable for set-point generation, bias trimming, or waveform reconstruction in industrial and automotive systems. The part integrates an internal voltage reference, so you do not need to add an external reference IC — one less line item on the BOM and one less trace on the board.
Data is written via an SPI interface. The string-DAC architecture gives monotonic performance across codes, and the INL/DNL spec of ±4 LSB / ±0.25 LSB means the output stays within a 4-LSB integral error band — fine for a 12-bit system where absolute accuracy matters less than repeatability. The buffered output can drive capacitive loads directly without an external op-amp, saving another component.
For BOM planning, there is no imminent end-of-life risk to budget for.
