10 kOhm, 257 taps, I²C — digital trim for the BOM
The MCP4552-103E/MS is a single-channel digital rheostat from Microchip, offering 10 kOhm end-to-end resistance with 257 wiper taps — enough resolution for fine-grain calibration loops in power supplies, sensor offsets, or audio volume control. It communicates over the I²C bus, so it fits into a two-wire control chain without dedicating extra GPIOs.
The wiper resistance is 75 ohms typical — low enough that it doesn't dominate the total resistance in most divider or rheostat applications, but worth factoring into the end-to-end tolerance budget. Temperature coefficient is 150 ppm/°C typical, so the resistance drifts about 1.5 ohms per 10°C shift — stable enough for calibration trims that don't need precision resistor tolerances.
The mute feature lets the wiper disconnect from the high terminal, and the selectable address allows up to eight devices on the same I²C bus without address conflict.
