What the 250V input and multi-topology mean for your backlight BOM
The HV9911NG-G-M901 is a DC DC controller from Microchip designed for constant-current LED backlighting. It supports SEPIC, step-down (buck), and step-up (boost) topologies, so the same part can drive a string of LEDs whether the input rail is lower, higher, or equal to the LED forward voltage. With a supply range from 9 V up to 250 V, this controller can run directly off a rectified AC line or a high-voltage DC bus without needing a separate bias supply — a real space and cost saver in display backlight and signage designs.
PWM dimming and switching frequency — setting the inductor and the brightness curve
PWM dimming is built in, letting the controller drive the LED string with a variable-duty PWM signal for brightness control. The switching frequency is selectable between 100 kHz and 350 kHz. At 350 kHz the inductor and output capacitor shrink, but switching losses and EMI rise; at 100 kHz the magnetics are larger but the thermal and noise budgets relax. Pick the frequency that fits your board area versus thermal margin.
