Offline LED driver with PWM dimming
The HV9801ANG-G is an AC DC Offline Switcher from Microchip Technology, designed as a PWM-dimmable LED driver in a buck (step-down) topology. It operates from a 15V to 450V supply range, making it suitable for direct offline rectified-line applications without an external DC-DC front end. The switching frequency is fixed at 1.2 kHz, which is low enough to minimize switching losses in the external MOSFET (the part has no internal switch) while keeping the inductor size manageable for typical LED string currents.
With a minimum supply of 15V and a maximum of 450V, the HV9801ANG-G can be powered directly from the rectified AC mains (120VAC or 240VAC) after a simple bulk capacitor, eliminating the need for an intermediate isolated supply. The 7.5V regulated output drives the gate of an external N-channel MOSFET in a buck configuration. The 16-SOIC package (3.90mm width) is a standard surface-mount footprint that suits automated assembly lines.
