Fan controller with integrated sigma-delta ADC
The Microchip EMC2103-4-AP-TR combines fan control and temperature monitoring in a single 16-QFN package, integrating a sigma-delta ADC, multiplexer, and register bank on-chip. It reads temperature from both an internal sensor and an external diode-connected transistor, reporting values with ±2°C accuracy over the measurement range.
What ±2°C accuracy buys in a thermal management loop
The ±2°C accuracy means the controller can trigger a fan-speed change or an overtemperature alarm within a tight thermal window — important when a 3°C margin separates normal operation from a derating event or system shutdown. The on-chip sigma-delta ADC converts the temperature reading into a digital word that the SMBus interface transmits to the host; the register bank holds the limit thresholds and fan-control parameters locally, so the host does not have to poll continuously.
16-QFN package and 3.3V supply rail
It runs from a single 3.3V supply, which is common in server, telecom, and industrial control backplanes where the fan tachometer and SMBus already share that rail.
