8 MHz AVR with 32 KB Flash — the BOM-fit tier
The Microchip ATMEGA32L-8AU is an 8-bit AVR microcontroller from the ATmega family, built around the AVR core. The 8 MHz core speed sets a clear performance ceiling: it handles low-to-mid throughput control tasks comfortably but won't run heavy DSP or high-frame-rate graphics. The 2.7V to 5.5V supply range makes it straightforward to drop into existing 3.3V or 5V rails without a separate regulator.
44-TQFP package and I/O count
Housed in a 44-TQFP (10x10 mm) package with 32 I/O lines, the ATMEGA32L-8AU offers a good balance of board area and pin availability. The TQFP footprint is hand-solderable and common in reflow processes. The 32 I/O includes an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, so analog sensor inputs don't eat into digital GPIO budget.
