The Microchip ATF16V8CZ-15PU is a 16V8-architecture EE PLD that replaces a handful of 74-series logic gates or a small PAL with one reprogrammable 20-pin DIP. It runs on a 5V supply and delivers a 15 ns propagation delay from input to combinatorial output — fast enough for most address decoding, bus arbitration, and state-machine glue in 8- and 16-bit systems.
15 ns speed — timing budget reality
The 15 ns tPD means the combinatorial path from any input through the AND-OR array to the output settles within that window. For a 5V system clocked at 33 MHz (30 ns period), that leaves 15 ns for external setup and routing delay — tight but workable with careful layout. If your design needs faster decode, the 10 ns or 7.5 ns siblings in the 16V8 family exist, but the 15 ns grade covers the bulk of legacy industrial and telecom logic.
8 macrocells — how much logic fits
Eight macrocells, each configurable as registered or combinatorial output, give you roughly 8 to 10 TTL-equivalent gate functions. That is enough for a 3-to-8 decoder with registered outputs, a small 4-state sequencer, or a handful of chip-select equations.
Through-hole DIP — the repair-bench angle
