The Microchip 25C040-I/P is a 4 Kbit serial EEPROM organized as 512 x 8 bits, accessed over an SPI bus at up to 3 MHz. The 8-pin PDIP through-hole package suits prototyping boards, socketed memory modules, or retrofit applications where an SMT footprint is impractical.
3 MHz SPI clock — bus timing and margin
The 3 MHz SPI clock is the ceiling for read and write operations. A page write plus the 5 ms write cycle dominates the transaction time.
Through-hole PDIP — board integration
The 8-DIP (0.300" row spacing) and 8-PDIP supplier package are the same physical footprint: a 7.62 mm-wide dual-in-line package for through-hole soldering or socket insertion.
Industrial temperature grade — deployment envelope
It is not qualified to AEC-Q100, so it is not the part for under-hood automotive or mission-critical avionics without additional screening. The 85°C upper limit is the standard industrial ceiling; designs that see sustained junction temperatures above that should look at extended-range EEPROMs or derate the operating conditions.
