The fast recovery characteristic (<500 ns, >200 mA Io) means the diode sweeps out stored charge quickly when the polarity reverses, reducing switching losses in a 50/60 Hz rectifier or a low-frequency flyback circuit. This is not an ultrafast diode for a 100 kHz switcher, but it is faster than a standard 1N400x series rectifier and suits applications where recovery time matters more than the 50/60 Hz baseline.

MIL-PRF-19500/620 — what the qualification means

MIL-PRF-19500/620 is the military specification for Schottky barrier diodes in the JAN (Joint Army-Navy) qualification system. It mandates screening and lot acceptance tests — temperature cycling, hermeticity, high-temperature reverse bias, and burn-in — that commercial Schottky diodes do not undergo. The B, Axial package is a welded hermetic glass body, not a molded epoxy DO-41 or DO-201AD, so it passes the fine-leak and gross-leak hermeticity tests required by the spec. The junction temperature range of -65°C to +125°C covers the full military temperature band, including cold-soak starts at -55°C and continuous operation at +125°C case temperature. The reverse leakage is specified at 150 µA max at 80 V — this is higher than a commercial Schottky at the same voltage, but the MIL spec prioritizes reliability over leakage, and the hermetic package prevents moisture ingress that would shift leakage over time.
