Zener diode in SQ-MELF – surge protection for harsh environments
The 1N6462US/TR is a unidirectional Zener diode from Microchip Technology, housed in a surface-mount SQ-MELF B package and supplied on Tape & Reel. It is designed for general-purpose circuit protection where a defined breakdown voltage and high surge capability are needed. With a minimum breakdown voltage of 6.5V and a typical reverse standoff of 6V, this part clamps transients at 11V maximum at the rated peak pulse current. The 500W peak pulse power rating (8/20µs waveform) gives it the energy capacity to handle lightning-induced surges or inductive load dumps in industrial and avionics power rails.
The 6.5V minimum breakdown sits above a 5V supply rail, so the diode does not conduct during normal operation. The 11V maximum clamping voltage at 258A peak pulse current (8/20µs) limits the transient voltage seen by downstream circuitry — but the clamp is not tight enough for 3.3V logic without additional series impedance or a lower-voltage TVS in front. Because the part lacks power line protection (no internal series element), it is a shunt-only device. The PCB layout must keep the trace inductance low between the diode and the protected node to avoid voltage overshoot above the clamp during fast transients.
Active production – sourcing via RFQ
Supplied in Tape & Reel (TR) format, the SQ-MELF package is compatible with standard pick-and-place assembly. The B, SQ-MELF footprint is shared with other Microchip Zener diodes in this series, simplifying second-source qualification if a same-package alternative is needed.
