The 5.0SMDJ30CAS is a bidirectional Zener-based TVS diode in the DO-214AB (SMC) package, rated 5000 W peak pulse at a 10/1000 µs surge waveform — the standard telecom transient shape (10 µs front, 1000 µs decay to half-amplitude). The peak pulse power rating tells you how much surge energy the clamping stage absorbs before the diode goes into conduction, so it is the first figure to size against the telecom line's surge-withstand requirement.
Standoff, breakdown, and clamping — the three-point window
The reverse standoff of 30 V sits above the normal operating bias of the protected telecom line. The minimum breakdown of 33.3 V is 3.3 V above standoff — that gap is intentional, so the diode stays off under normal signaling and only clamps when a genuine transient pushes past the protection threshold. The protected circuit therefore sees 48.4 V during the event — not the raw overvoltage amplitude.
Thermal and mechanical fit
Operating junction temperature runs from -65 deg C to 150 deg C. That range covers outdoor telecom cabinets and enclosures that swing wide across seasons — the 150 deg C ceiling is well above any reasonable board-level ambient under normal load. Surface-mount SMC package is reflow-solderable with standard profiles and responds to hot-air rework if a faulty diode needs replacement on an assembled board.
