ESR and temperature — the real selection limits
The 150 mOhm ESR at 100 kHz is the figure that governs AC ripple handling. On a 12 V input rail feeding a 3 A buck converter, the ripple current through this cap stays below the self-heating limit if the switching frequency is above 200 kHz — the ESR drops slightly with frequency, so the actual dissipation is lower than a DC calculation suggests. The -55°C to 125°C operating range covers industrial and most automotive under-hood ambients, but the capacitance derates below -55°C and above 85°C per the standard tantalum curve. For a rail that needs tight ripple, the actual capacitance at the DC bias voltage (16 V rated, derate to 10 V or below for reliability) can be 30-40% lower than the nominal 220 µF — the 150 mOhm ESR is the more stable parameter for filter design.
