ESR and thermal budget in a 2917 case
The TPSD107K016H0150: The 150 mOhm ESR is the dominant loss term — at the rated DC voltage and ripple current, self-heating raises the internal temperature above ambient. For a 100 µF part in a 2917 case, that ESR limits the ripple current to roughly 1.2 A RMS before the internal temperature hits the 125°C ceiling. A design that pushes the ripple current close to that limit needs a layout with the cathode pad tied to a copper pour to sink the heat.
The molded case and 2917 footprint hold up to the thermal cycling without cracking the dielectric, but the capacitance tolerance (±10%,) and ESR shift with temperature: expect capacitance to drop ~20% at -55°C and ESR to rise by a factor of two at the cold end.
