Molded tantalum in a 1206 footprint
The molded epoxy body gives consistent dimensional control for pick-and-place and withstands reflow soldering without cracking — a failure mode common in conformal-coated tantalums when the board bends. Rated at 0.22 µF with ±20% tolerance and 50 V DC, it fits decoupling and bulk-storage roles on rails up to 48 V nominal. The 13 Ohm ESR is the number that matters for ripple current — at 100 kHz the capacitor self-heats from the AC current squared times ESR, so keep the RMS ripple below the datasheet limit to avoid thermal runaway.
ESR at 13 Ohm is high relative to ceramic or polymer capacitors of the same value — the self-heating from ripple current is the main derating factor. For a 0.22 µF cap at 50 V, the typical ripple current limit is in the tens of milliamps; exceeding it dries the electrolyte and shifts the capacitance down over time. On a repair bench, a shorted or low-capacitance TAJ-series cap shows up as a hot spot under thermal imaging or as excessive ripple on the rail.
