35 V in an 0805 — the footprint trade-off
The TAJP105M035RNJ: This is a 1 µF tantalum rated at 35 V in an 0805 case — that voltage-to-footprint ratio is uncommon. For a BOM engineer, it means you get a 35 V decoupling cap in a 2.05 mm x 1.35 mm land pattern, which saves board space on a 12 V or 24 V rail where most 0805 ceramics would need a higher voltage rating or derating. The 11 Ohm ESR is a meaningful number — it limits the ripple current the cap can handle before self-heating becomes a concern. On a low-ripple DC rail (like an LDO output) it's fine; on a switching converter output, you'll want to check the ripple current against the cap's dissipation factor.
It's a fit for avionics black boxes, satellite power buses, downhole instrumentation, and engine-bay ECUs — any environment where the ambient swings wide and the board sees both cold soak and hot run.
