4.7 µF at 50 V — bulk decoupling on a 12-48 V rail
The TAJD475M050HNJ: This is a molded tantalum capacitor from the TAJ series, rated 4.7 µF at 50 V with ±20% tolerance. The D-case (2917 metric) footprint fits standard 7.3 x 4.3 mm pads. The 50 V rating gives headroom on a 24 V bus or a 48 V telecom rail — the typical derating rule (50% of rated voltage) still leaves 25 V working margin. ESR is 1.4 Ohm at 100 kHz. In a switching-regulator output filter, that ESR sets the ripple voltage and the self-heating. At 1 A ripple current, the I²R loss is 1.4 W — enough to raise the internal temperature above the 125 °C ceiling if the PCB copper doesn't sink the heat. For a low-ripple bypass role (e.g., a few hundred mA), the 1.4 Ohm ESR is fine.
Temperature range and lifetime — where the 2000-hour ceiling bites
Operating from -55 to 125 °C covers military and industrial extremes — avionics, downhole logging, or outdoor base-station power supplies. At 85 °C, the same cap can run past 10,000 hours before the electrolyte dries out. The molded case (type Molded) is standard for surface-mount tantalums — no conformal-coat compatibility issues, but the part is not hermetic. Moisture sensitivity is MSL 3 typical for this series; a bake-out before reflow is required if the bag humidity indicator card shows >10% RH.
