ESR and ripple current budget in a switching converter
900 mOhm ESR at 100 kHz sets the ripple voltage across the cap for a given ripple current — a 1 A pk-pk ripple develops 900 mV of AC voltage, which may exceed the output ripple spec of a 3.3 V rail if the cap is the sole filter element. The 2917 (7343 Metric) D-size case provides enough surface area to dissipate the self-heating from the ESR; the molded package withstands board-wash and conformal-coat processes without performance shift.
