ESR and ripple — what 1.2 Ohm means on your rail
ESR is specified at 1.2 Ohm max at 100 kHz. For a 10 µF output cap on a 500 kHz buck converter, that ESR sets the output ripple voltage and the capacitor's self-heating. A lower-ESR tantalum (e.g., 0.5 Ohm) would run cooler at the same ripple current, but the 1.2 Ohm figure is typical for a standard TAJ D-case at this voltage rating.
Package and footprint — 2917 D-case
The 7.30 mm x 4.30 mm footprint with a seated height of 3.10 mm is the common D-size tantalum outline. It is a surface-mount molded case, tape-and-reel packaged for automated pick-and-place. The pad layout follows the standard 2917 land pattern; no via-in-pad needed.
