What this 1 µF 50 V tantalum capacitor covers
The TAJC105M050RNJ is a 1 µF, 50 V molded tantalum capacitor from the TAJ series by KYOCERA AVX, in a 2312 (6032 Metric) surface-mount package. The 50 V rating gives plenty of headroom on 12 V, 24 V, and 48 V rails — useful in industrial power supplies, telecom line cards, and automotive auxiliary circuits where a standard 25 V part would be marginal.
ESR and ripple current — the thermal budget
The 5.5 Ohm ESR at 25°C is the series resistance that limits ripple current handling. At 100 kHz, the ripple current rating is typically derived from the ESR and the maximum allowed self-heating — higher ESR means less ripple current before the part exceeds its temperature rise limit. For a 1 µF cap on a 50 V rail, the ESR is less of a concern than on a bulk decoupling cap, but it matters in output filters where ripple current is continuous.
