Molded tantalum in 0805 – bulk decoupling for tight boards
The F380J476MSA is a 47 µF molded tantalum capacitor rated at 6.3 V, housed in an 0805 (2012 Metric) case. The 200 mOhm ESR at 100 kHz makes it suitable for low-ripple decoupling on 1.8 V or 3.3 V rails where ceramic capacitance would de-rate too far under DC bias. Operating range spans -55°C to 105°C, covering outdoor telecom and industrial control enclosures. The 1000-hour endurance at 85°C sets a practical service ceiling – beyond that, leakage and ESR drift accelerate.
NRND – plan a replacement before production commit
Existing builds can continue, but any new BOM line should target a pin-compatible alternative in the same F38 series or a drop-in from a competing tantalum supplier. A 100 kHz ripple current of 1 A produces 200 mV of ripple across the cap – budget that against the load's supply-noise tolerance. The ±20% tolerance is standard for tantalum; the actual capacitance at 6.3 V will sit near the nominal 47 µF, but de-rate to ~70% at rated voltage. The 0805 case (2.00 mm x 1.25 mm, 1.00 mm seated height) fits dense layouts but limits the thermal mass for rework – preheat the board to 100°C before hand-soldering.
