Supply Chain & Allocation Reality:

This 8-pin family is the beating heart of compact fluorescent and LED ballasts, small inverters and induction heaters: a 600V half-bridge driver with its own 555-style RC oscillator, fixed 50 percent duty and internal deadtime - the entire controller for a resonant circuit in one chip. The generations read in order: IR2151 and IR2155 were the originals, IR2153 is the improved version with a real shutdown feature on the CT pin, micropower startup and tighter deadtime, and IR2153D folds in the bootstrap diode that the bare parts need externally. The substitution story is friendly - the 2153 upgrades the earlier parts in the same socket - but the oscillator timing components are the design, and repairs that keep the chip while ignoring the RT/CT network re-fail by design.

The Same Chip with the Diode Brought Inside

Shenzhen Spot Stock (24-48h Dispatch)

Electrical & Core Specs:

Identical driver to the IR2153 with the bootstrap diode integrated - the D suffix removes one external component and one layout concern from every design.

Same 600V half-bridge class, 15.6V VCC clamp and micropower startup.

Compatibility & Drop-In Notes: The direction question in repair: a board designed for the bare IR2153 works with the D part (external diode now redundant in parallel), while a D-designed board needs the external diode added if only the bare part is available. Both work; one needs a part fitted.
Package & Solder Footprint: Identical 8-pin pinout.
Shenzhen Warehouse Stock & MOQ: Active Infineon production; the default orderable of the family.

The Original, Stronger Gate Drive

Shenzhen Spot Stock (24-48h Dispatch)

Electrical & Core Specs:

The earlier generation with the strongest output stage of the row (1000pF load at 80/40ns class) but none of the 2153s refinements: no CT-pin shutdown, coarser deadtime control, no VCC clamp.

Same 600V class; without the clamp the supply design carries what the 2153 absorbed.

Compatibility & Drop-In Notes: The upgrade direction is documented: the IR2153 substitutes for the IR2155/2151 with the same pinout, adding shutdown and tighter deadtime. Going backward gives up those protections - in a repair, prefer going forward unless the design analysis says otherwise.
Package & Solder Footprint: Same 8-pin body.
Shenzhen Warehouse Stock & MOQ: Legacy-channel stock; inspect markings on old lots.

The Modern Orderable

Shenzhen Spot Stock (24-48h Dispatch)

Electrical & Core Specs:

The current-recommended version of the same function: integrated bootstrap diode, updated process, documentation for new designs.

Same envelope with the refinements of the successor line.

Compatibility & Drop-In Notes: Same socket and function; verify the oscillator timing against the design value as with any substitution in this family - the RT/CT network is the controller, and small differences in thresholds shift the frequency.
Package & Solder Footprint: Identical 8-pin pinout.
Shenzhen Warehouse Stock & MOQ: Active production; the long-term supply answer.
Buyer & Quality Checklist for Sourcing Alternatives
  • The RT/CT network is the whole controller: oscillator frequency, deadtime behavior and startup all flow from those two components. A repair that changes the chip without checking the timing components has replaced the messenger, not the message.
  • Deadtime is internal and fixed (about 1.2us on the 8-pin family): circuits that needed different deadtime used a different, programmable family (IR2157 class) - do not expect the socket to provide it.
  • The IR2153 shutdown rides on the CT pin (below about one sixth of VCC): circuits that abuse that pin for a soft start or a dimmer input are leaning on a feature the older parts did not have.
  • IR2153D versus IR2153: the D brings the bootstrap diode inside. Boards designed for the bare part tolerate the D; boards designed for the D need the external diode if only the bare part is fitted.
  • In ballast repair, the chip is often the last casualty: the resonant capacitor, the lamp/load and the gate resistors die first. Meter the passives before fitting the third driver into the same board.
  • The 600V class assumes the bus stays inside it: the electrolytic and the inrush path define the actual transient at the half-bridge - check them when a driver dies at switch-on.
Frequently Asked Technical Questions

Q: What is the difference between IR2153 and IR2155?

A: Generation and features, not fit: same 8-pin socket and 600V class, but the 2153 adds CT-pin shutdown, micropower startup, a VCC clamp and tighter deadtime, while the 2155 has the stronger gate drive of the early row.

Q: Can IR2153 replace IR2151 or IR2155?

A: Yes - it is the documented upgrade with the same pinout and function, adding protections the older parts lacked. Keep the oscillator timing components of the original design; the chip is the controller but the RC network is the design.

Q: Is IR2153D different from IR2153?

A: Only the bootstrap diode: the D integrates it. Both directions of substitution work - the D in a bare socket leaves the external diode harmlessly redundant; the bare part in a D socket needs that external diode fitted.
